About the Literacy Council

Gaston Literacy Council, Inc., a primary provider of literacy services in Gaston County, is a progressive organization dedicated to helping individuals improve their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.   All services are free and confidential.

GLC tailors its services to support our community’s economic development initiatives through improved English-language speaking and literacy skills, elementary school reading goals, and increased civic involvement. As our county’s economy has evolved, Gaston Literacy’s role in the community has also, from imparting basic survival skills to helping students learn and improve their English, enter or move up in the workforce, and earn Citizenship.  GLC’s services empower students to be engaged in the community, participate in their children’s education, and take better control of all aspects of their lives by speaking and understanding English and improving reading skills.

Gaston Literacy Council, Inc. is a member of Pro Literacy, the largest adult literacy and basic education membership organization in the nation. Pro Literacy believes that a safer, stronger, and more sustainable society starts with an educated adult population. GLC is also proud to have achieved “Platinum” status with GuideStar, the world’s largest source of information on nonprofit organizations.

We gratefully acknowledge our volunteers and donors who help bring about remarkable results year after year, and we appreciate their philosophy of continuous improvement as we work together to deliver the best possible services to our clients. With GLC’s help, our students achieve their educational goals and improve their quality of life.
