About the Literacy Council

Gaston Literacy Council, Inc., a primary provider of literacy services in Gaston County, is a progressive organization dedicated to helping individuals improve their reading, writing, mathematics, listening, speaking, and technology skills; all services are free and confidential.

GLC tailors its services to support our community’s economic development initiatives, elementary school reading goals, high school graduation rates, and increased civic involvement. As our County’s economy has evolved, Gaston Literacy’s role in the community has also, from imparting basic survival skills to helping clients attain a high school equivalency, enter post-secondary education and/or the workforce, and earn Citizenship.  GLC’s services empower students to be engaged in the community, participate in their children’s education, vote, and take control of their health.

Gaston Literacy Council, Inc. is a member of ProLiteracy, the largest adult literacy and basic education membership organization in the nation. ProLiteracy believes that a safer, stronger, and more sustainable society starts with an educated adult population. GLC is also proud to have achieved “Platinum” status with Guidestar, the world’s largest source of information on nonprofit organizations.

GLC has been recognized by the North Carolina Community College System as an agency whose program practices are effective and efficient.

We gratefully acknowledge our volunteers and donors who help bring about remarkable results year after year, and we appreciate their philosophy of continuous improvement as we work together to deliver the best possible services to our clients. With GLC’s help, our students achieve their educational and employment goals and earn family-sustaining wages leading to a fundamental improvement in their quality of life.
